Cowboy builders are the bane of the construction industry, but DEFRA are the Cowboy Bureaucrats of government mismanagement.

I was going to make jokes about DEFRA being at the centre of the lawlessness Wild West-minster but a cowboy hat on a clown in a suit is such a nice standalone optic.

Public Service Announcement!

  • Cowboy Builders and Cowboy Bureaucrats are the cause of severe emotional, mental and financial turmoil.
  • Cowboy Builders and Cowboy Bureaucrats both have to learn on the job.
  • Cowboy Builders and Cowboy Bureaucrats both pretend they are qualified for jobs that they’ve never done before.
  • Cowboy Builders and Cowboy Bureaucrats both pretend that they are providing a public service.
  • Cowboy Builders and Cowboy Bureaucrats don’t have a complaints procedure and don’t operate a basic customer service.
  • Cowboy Builders and Cowboy Bureaucrats have no qualifications, produce shoddy work and lack any business acumen or common sense.
  • Cowboy Builders and Cowboy Bureaucrats both expect their victims to live with the mess they made after they think the job’s finished.
  • Cowboy Builders and Cowboy Bureaucrats do not understand the relevance or value of expertise or quality of work.
  • Cowboy Builders and Cowboy Bureaucrats all use unnecessary delays and baseless excuses to do nothing.
  • Cowboy Builders and Cowboy Bureaucrats work needs to be inspected and all Cowboy work needs to undergo continuous reworking by competent professionals to get right.

When the work’s not being done …

When Cowboy Builders are supposed to be working they can be found in any greasy café slurping gritty coffee from pint mugs and having their sausage and beans cooked up at some downmarket truck stop across from B&QWickesies.
When Cowboy Bureaucrats are supposed to be working they can be found slurping a latte out of china mugs and having their sausage and beans cooked up at some upmarket Pret a Merder establishment across from the London Eye.
