DEFRA: The Clueless (Part IV)

Amercan theocrats view the Handmaid's Tale as a guide to subjugation and control over female autonomy. George Orwell's satirical political critique of Authoritarian rule was a warning that this course will always end up in destruction. And bureaucrats see themselves in the role of emulating the rulers in Aldous Huxley's Brave New World by crushing all protagonists by smashing every ounce of free-agency out of existence.

Bureaucrats: "If people just obeyed the rules, then everything would be perfect."

The protagonist: So in other words, DEFRA is just another acronym for an authoritarian Dystopia?

The laughable regulations and the disgraceful inefficiencies introduced by DEFRA exemplify the phrase, "those that can, do and those that can't do anything become bureaucrats"

In the real world booking conversations go like this:

"Hi Sylvia, how's Bertie? Yes we have availability in August. And the dates please? OK, you're all booked in, I'll send you the email confirmation when we've finished in the cattery.

In a brave new DEFRA-world, booking conversations have to be conducted like this:

"I'm sorry but a lot's changed since last year. Catteries and Kennels are all now government controlled and we can no longer think for ourselves or provide you with any bespoke or individual services. We're now under the care of vets and even in emergencies we cannot use the isolation room or leave the premesis and must rely on our customer's paying for vets to make house calls. We have an extensive list of information we must obtain from everyone based on the requirements found in the new regulations - and if you have around 30 minutes to spare well have to go through them with you ...

OK, let's start with the regulation mandating scratching posts. No, you cannot provide your own, it cannot be made of sisal rope and must be either seated on the floor or mounted vertically and no free-standing pole versions are allowed - if you need us to provide a DEFRA approved version, it's expensive and only for single use - and I'm sorry that horizontally mounted sisal scratching posts are now grounds for license revocation.

Yes, the prices have gone up due to implementation of the new regulations, and I know that there are hundereds of unlicensed and unregulated cat-sitters springing up all over, but why give an uninsured stranger access to your home and hope they don't sell knowledge of the contents to criminal gangs or cancel the day before you go on holiday because of a suspected mild sniffle?" I'm sorry, it'll go much quicker if you obey DEFRA, there's only fifty more situations and rules to cover ... and the quicker we get started the more time I'll have to spend with the cats ... [Click]
